November: Time to eat healthy fats and stay warm

In Ayurveda, November is associated with the Vata dosha, which is associated with dryness, mobility and coolness.

During this time, it is important to focus on keeping the body warm and moist.

Our appetite is at its peak and the agni (digestive fire) burns stronger. Therefore, it spontaneously wants to accumulate the fat necessary to strengthen itself and protect itself from the cold.

Ayurveda advises against fasting and detoxing in November during the vata period because it can lead to a weakened immune system and illness. This is also not the time for low-fat diets. On the contrary, we should increase our intake of healthy fats such as sesame oil, olive oil, butter, ghee and nuts.

What to eat in November?

In November, let’s enjoy food that warms and is nutritious. It should be rich in fats, carbohydrates and proteins:

  • Butter, ghee and other healthy fat.
  • Oils such as sesame oil, olive oil and coconut oil.
  • Grains such as barley, oats and wheat.
  • Legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas.
  • Meats such as chicken, beef and fish.
  • Vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and squash.
  • Avoid light and cold foods such as salads, ice cream and carbonated drinks.

How do we take care of ourselves in November?

  • We regularly consume warm liquids such as tea, soup and compote.
  • We use a humidifier indoors.
  • We do regular exercise that is not too strenuous.
  • Let’s spend time in nature.
  • Allow yourself enough sleep.

In the morning, take time to take a bath or shower with hot water. This helps you warm up and relax. Treat yourself to a massage with heating oil every night before bed, which relaxes you and prepares you for sleep. Spend some time in nature. Fresh air and sunlight will help keep you healthy and happy.

What you need to know if you have a Vata constitution?
If you have a Vata constitution, you are particularly sensitive to dryness and coldness. During this time, it is important to take extra care to stay hydrated and dressed warmly.

Here are some additional tips for Vata individuals:

  • Drink plenty of warm water with lemon, ginger and honey.
  • Do Abhyanga, oil massage every day.
  • Use Nasya Oil, an Ayurvedic nasal oil.
  • Don’t skip meals.
  • Give preference to foods that are warming, nutritious and heavy.
  • Go to bed early.

Pittas will benefit from cooler weather and shorter daylight hours, so they should enjoy dense, heavy and soft food. They should exercise regularly but avoid anything that is very strenuous.

Kapha individuals can become unbalanced at this time if they overeat and become lazy. It is important that they move regularly and are exposed to the sun.
